Babassu Oil vs. Coconut Oil: Similar Chemistry, Different Experience
A closer look at two tropical oils with distinctly different textures
For years, coconut oil was treated as the natural beauty world’s cure-all. It showed up in every DIY recipe and “clean” formulation imaginable. I used it too—until my skin made it clear it wasn’t the universal hero it was made out to be. The heaviness, the irritation, the unmistakable aroma that clashed with every essential oil blend… it simply wasn’t the right fit.
Building a waterless, deeply concentrated line meant being intentional about every oil from the start. The choices I made would define the texture, absorption, and overall feel. Coconut oil didn’t align with that vision. It was too heavy for a face cream and far too messy for a daily deodorant, which pushed me to look for a more elegant alternative.
My search for a more elegant alternative led me to babassu oil (Orbignya oleifera), a lauric-rich tropical oil that shares many of coconut oil’s desirable qualities while delivering a noticeably different sensory experience.
Babassu Fruit
Babassu oil (Orbignya oleifera) is produced from the kernels found inside the fruit of the babassu palm.
Why They Feel So Different
Both oils are built on similar fatty acids—primarily lauric and myristic—which is why they melt so quickly on contact with skin. But babassu’s unique balance gives it a noticeably lighter, drier finish. Instead of sitting on top of the skin, it absorbs quickly and leaves a smooth, velvety feel that works beautifully in refined facial and body products. Coconut oil, by contrast, creates a thicker, more occlusive layer. Many people enjoy that richness for body care, but on the face it can feel heavy and is often associated with irritation or congestion. On the comedogenic scale, coconut oil sits around a 4; babassu typically falls between 1 and 2, making it well suited for a wider range of skin types.
For my own sensitive skin, that lighter feel made a noticeable difference.
Performance Without Compromise
In a concentrated, waterless line, texture matters just as much as function. Babassu allows Harvest & Bloom to capture the conditioning benefits of lauric-rich tropical oils without the weight or residue. It’s a key ingredient in the Restorative Night Cream and Deodorant, helping each formula remain elegant, lightweight, and deeply nourishing.
Refinement isn’t about adding more—it’s about choosing better. Babassu oil embodies that philosophy and remains one of the quiet foundational ingredients behind the lightweight, concentrated experience that defines Harvest & Bloom.
